Due to rapid development of electronics technology, 20 billion IoT devices are expected to be deployed by 2020. To connect such tremendous amounts of devices, several low power wide area (several Km range) networking technologies have been developed, one of them being LoRa radio and LoRaWAN network. The key advantages of this technology are as follows. (i) Its operating frequencies and network technology are open, and thus, anyone can deploy and use, which means that users do not have to rely on a specific vendor/provider. (ii) A gateway can cover a few kilometers radius and 10,000 of sensors. (iii) It offers more downlink options. (iv) It entails strong security methods.
In this session, we will cover and explain the followings: (i) basic LoRaWAN technology, (ii) LoRaWAN stack software packages, (iii) LoRa module programming, and (iv) various methods to connect to cloud services.

5G New Radio (NR) is a new part of unified radio air interface that has been developed for 5G mobile communications. 5G NR deals with modulation, waveforms, and access technologies that will enable the system to meet the requirements of peak data rate at 20Gbps with enhanced bandwidth efficiency, while supporting ultra-reliable low latency communication with 1ms radio latency. It works on the wide range of frequency band below 6GHz and above 6GHz. For the frequency range of the above 6GHz, e.g., 28GHz band, a beam-based air interface is essential for dealing with significantly higher path and penetration loss, while exploiting a large number of antenna elements to boost up the bandwidth efficiency. The main theme of this tutorial will present the 5G system overview and cover some physical layer aspects of NR specification. It is aimed at those who want to understand how 3GPP NR is different from LTE, but already have learned the basics of wireless and mobile communication systems, e.g., digital modulation and cellular system architecture.
